So many details are to be discovered in this icon of design starting from the left handed spiral shaped crown, the Greek font text on the dial, the engraving on the side of case and case back..and last but not least the only numbered limited edition Rolex. This one is #1054.
The manual wind movement is winding and running smooth.
Inspired by Greek mythology, the watch takes its name from King Midas. The story of the mythological King Midas is one of great tragedy but also of happiness. Known for his obsession with gold, he asked Dionysus – god of wine and revelry – to grant him a wish: for everything that he touched to turn into gold. He soon realised his fortune was a curse when his own daughter turned into a gold statue whilst embracing her. Dionysus felt sorry for King Midas and reversed the curse. From then on, he decided to share his great fortune with his people, ultimately becoming a better person and more beloved king.
Designed by Gérald Genta, Rolex released the watch in 1964, and at the time it was the heaviest, gold watch money could buy. Exuding extravagance, it was designed for a select few, appealing specifically to left-handed clients and made to be worn on the right wrist. This is to honour the legend of King Midas, whose left hand possessed the golden touch.
